Week 10 3/8/2020

Expand your thinking.

Music and culture merge in expression of life experience. Ideas must be realized in action.

Week 28 7/14/19

Keep to the One.

This expression is associated with the Celestial Way.  It implies honesty, nobility, and a connectedness with the phenomena of existence.

One has an understanding of these things, or one does not, and one lives accordingly.

What has this to do with art and music?

Week 23 2/9/19

No need for explanation or justification.

One accepts, or one does not.  There is a difference between art and propaganda, and it is profound.

Week 7 2/17/19

Know, with will to vision.

Much goes unseen.  Far more goes unheard.  This is to say, perceptual awareness is dimmed by a passive focus on perspectives reinforced by conformist attitudes.  To become knowledgeable beyond this mental and emotional bondage demands conscious intent to expand critical thinking.

Week 49 12/10/17

Certain things must be done.  Many are mundane.

The issue is the application of music to social and cultural situations in which music, "as we know it", is not optimal. This is always the case when music demands the listener's full attention, and, though it is less intrusive when it simply invites attention, it may still become a distraction.

Reading, thinking, conversation, and things of this nature do not benefit from distractions, and sound developed and expressed for these scenarios must be conducive to being relaxed, yet alert.

Brian Eno's ambient music develops rarefied musical events to evoke this stage of consciousness; I have been developing, over the past decade, a means to a singular, and to the extent possible, an over-arching, non-musical, atmospheric and environment effect with disparate implications.

To paraphrase Poe, it is a total effect designed as a singular, overarching expression, suitable for the aforementioned occasions, and for the expansion of consciousness.  Yet, as I have since verified in academic practice, it has additional, peculiar effects, such as allowing, thus increasing, individual focus of attention on other activities, and providing extended relief from such challenges as ADHD.

While not intentional, this is nonetheless a proven fact, verified by objective results, and a welcome artistic development, with possible applications to PTSD as well.  This necessitates continuing experimentation, study, and review.

Week 38 9/24/17

Perceptions inform consciousness: awareness.

Consciousness informs perception: visionary perspective.

Subjectivity informs perceptual consciousness: falsity.

Week 20 May 21, 2017

Give attention to the setting.

Consciousness expands, engaging reality and sensory awareness.  This is understanding separate and distinct from the social, cultural, and political abstractions that encompass daily pursuits.

This is experience revealed in elevated expression.

Working

See, hear, directly.

Observe with aesthetic perceptivity, act with existential certainty.

Some Will Understand, Others Will Not

Bring the uncanny into expression.  It is a tall order, yet it can be done.

The beginning is abstract, that is to say, theoretical.  This vision must comport with the possibility of perceptual reality that may be rendered in concrete form.  For the composer, this acknowledges the fact that sounds must be transformed and synthesized to evoke extramundane experience, and then juxtaposed and reproduced in aesthetic contexts unrelated to designs generally attributed to music, while being accessible within the sphere of art.

What the mind conceives, the hand may render.  Listen, and hear.

Greater Lengths

Cultural observations are, as often as not, personal matters.

Formal analysis of these issues is of no concern to anyone but the artist.  The academician regards them disdainfully, the lay person has no interest whatsoever, and the active music listener exhibits little more than subjective, emotional connectivity to the arts of sound.  Such things as aesthetic value and purpose are outside these areas of bias.

This is natural.  It is the artist as composer for whom these cultural forces determine the existential necessity for sustained effort.

Levitation and Somnolence

In contemporary culture, observe a pervading, and rather benighted, materialism.

It is a point of view without a fragment of merit, one unworthy of empathy, and one that most often sees good will as a weakness to be exploited.

This is not a modern perspective, being far too incurious and complacent. It is by no means a measure of sophistication to claim to believe that every question of grand moment is long settled, and that life, being metaphysically worthless, is fit only for an ideal of epicurean hedonism.

The abysmally ignorant arrive such a conclusion with far less effort than the "highly-educated".

No, the modern perspective is informed, analytical, and cognizant of cultural and historical forces that elevate the fundamentals of human understanding.

Here, find the voice of perception, realism, and critical, open awareness that says, "There is much more to experience, much more to be known. There is always more."

Source

Let the "aesthetic" that elevates consciousness be the one of paramount value.

This is the essential aesthetic and the origin of all others, these being lesser lights.

Breaking Point

Art and Time can not be contained or eliminated.  Their influences are manifest.

Art and Time are ever in flux, and only the artist moves in this manner, which is the expression of creation.  Civilization and creation are the mark of the artist, and without the artist, civilization will not be, and life will be altogether removed, cruel, evil, and brief.

Controversy I

Culture is manipulated; it is not evolving naturally.

This is the result of ignorance, rather than any conspiratorial action. When populations and demographics en masse are bereft of the cultural knowledge that makes essential expressions comprehensible, there can be, within such a culture, no individual freedom.

Existentially, the artist can only be an outsider.  There is no audience behind a wall of sleep.

Song and Awakening

Observe music as a series of sound patterns.

Note that tone and intensity of sound establishes meaning in a musical composition to the same extent as lyrical content and vocal delivery.  Nothing more may be conveyed than a particular mood or attitude, yet there are no known limits to the degree to which intellectual and emotional stimulation is possible through immersion in sound.

New Sonic Awareness

Metaphor, in its most easily recognized form, exists in combinations of words and images.

It is the composition that develops sound as extended, or "epic" metaphor that illuminates a poetic potential in listening as well as unforeseen new directions in music.

Exercise X

Set aside all knowledge and conceptual ideas regarding "music".

Postulate a theory of "music" based solely upon the ways sound phenomena exist and are perceived.
