Week 52 12/30/18

We cannot be compromised by "narratives".

This is the undeniable power of the arts, above and beyond superficial judgement of man. The power of Being and Mind is superior to the merely physical and transcends semantic debate.

The ancient masters were subtle, mysterious, profound, responsive.
The depth of their knowledge is unfathomable...

Have you patience to wait till the mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoved and unmoving till the right action arises by itself? – Lao Tsu

Week 51 12/16/18

Vision is fulfilled in the creative act.

To do that which is good is to know it, and desire it.  The act is always in motion.

Week 50 12/23/18

Seeking clarity, can you see the future?

Rather than bring chaos to order, unify disparate elements across all boundaries.

Week 49 12/10/18

Mythology and folklore speak of music as a magical force.

Sounds associated with enchantment and sorcery are at a far distance from contemporary understanding, being associated with narratives of extraordinary events.  But there is more.

When music is central to tales of the strange and paranormal, attempts to evoke its nature falter.  It is invariably described as otherworldly, beautiful, mystical... and altogether unlike anything that would fit a modern definition of "music".  It defies memory of rhythm and melody, leaving only a deep, lasting impression of high strangeness.

The composer would do well who would evoke, and repeatedly express, this formlessness.

Week 48 12/2/18

One may create, and the finished work may have clarity, yet appear obscure.

Nonetheless there are some things within the artist's control, while others are not.

Week 47 11/25/18

Only the artist speaks for the art.

And through the art the artist speaks.

Week 45 11/11/18

Out of silence, grasp sound and motion.

Compose the sonic field for the ear as the visual artist does for the eye.

Sunday, October 28, 2018

Week 43 10/28/18

Energy, frequency, vibration.

What do expanded consciousness and enhanced perception suggest?

Sunday, October 21, 2018

Week 42 10/21/18

Upon close observation, nothing is "ordinary".

Listen, hear, then perceive sound in a different way, without falsification of subjectivity.

Sunday, October 14, 2018

Week 41 10/14/18

Creativity is often directed by silent, powerful forces.

These influences are interwoven with the arc of history. They are always present, and waiting to be made manifest through individual ideas and actions.

Week 40 10/7/18

Find patterns in ambiguity.

Compose to suggest atmospheres, allowing possibilities of auditory pareidolia.

Sunday, September 30, 2018

Week 39 9/30/18

Perceive actively, with all the senses.

One may look and not see, just as one may hear but not listen.

Sunday, September 23, 2018

Week 38 9/21/18

Question.  Understand.  Explore.  Know.

All things rise, fall, and ultimately move forward.

Sunday, September 16, 2018

Week 37 9/16/18

Allow impressions of the surroundings to form.

Compose fields of sound accordingly. These are atmospherics, owing little to "music".

Sunday, September 09, 2018

Week 36 9/9/18

Many artists are doing extraordinary work, yet much remains unseen and unheard.

Access is narrowly focused in terms of social and cultural interests. This will change.

Sunday, September 02, 2018

Week 35 9/2/18

Culture involves choice.  To know, or not to know.

This is why culture may divide as well as unite.

Sunday, August 26, 2018

Week 34 8/26/18

Reject programming.

It is difficult to break away from what one is accustomed to hearing.  Listen critically.

Week 32 8/12/18

Atmosphere, time, and place.

What you hear are impressions imbued with meaning.

Sunday, August 05, 2018

Week 31 8/5/18

Disengage from the false and contrived.

Perceive without subjectivity. How would this enhance cognizance of what is genuine and true?

To listen is to concentrate, to hear is to expand the perception. There is always more to know.

Week 30 7/29/18

Form and Function.

The art of sound transcends communication of emotion and idea, as it transcends evocation of physical movement.  Nor are these the limits of "music", but merely common, narrow expectations.

What do expanded thinking and broader perception suggest?
